Research profile

I have concentrated my research interests in three major coordinated areas: (1) philosophy of mind and phenomenology, (2) epistemology and philosophy of science, and, with less intensity but not less interest, (3) moral and political philosophy.

During the last years of my B.A. at the Complutense University of Madrid, Husserl’s phenomenology was my focus of philosophical interest. A research stay at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during my PhD give me the opportunity to study the philosophy of mind in the Anglo-American tradition. The awareness that both traditions were discussing the same problems (the intentionality of consciousness, the nature of mental states, the insertion of consciousness in the physical world, etc.), but from different, if not incommensurable perspectives, gave me the occasion to explore the flaws, virtues, overlapping and differences between these two traditions.

PARA ORDENADOR:

Theory of knowledge’s classical problems from Plato to present times led me to the study of the pragmatist tradition which, at the same time, sparkled in me a renewed interest in the philosophy of science. In this area I have put forward the notions of epistemic vulnerability, asymmetric fallibilism and epistemic verisimilitude, in a non-Popperian sense, and applied them to the study of theory change and how we should epistemologically evaluate the changing results of our scientific theories. I have proposed a new model of theory change and have applied it to several moments in the history of science. The account that I put forward avoids the main problems of realism, antirealism and semirealism, but collects many of their merits.

I spent a year as post-doc student at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) where Professor Alasdair MacIntyre catalysed my previous engagement with issues in moral and political philosophy. Publications and teaching courses followed from the study of the classical tradition, contractualism, rational decision theory, and psychoanalysis regarded as a theory of action.

Research Projects

Since 1996 I have been a Research Fellow in a number of different competitive research projects. At present, I am the P.I. of the Research Project “Cognitive Vulnerability (II): Interest, Inquiry, and Asymmetric Knowledge” of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2022-138306NB-100).

This project is the continuation of a previous one: “Cognitive Vulnerability, Verisimilitude and Truth” (FFI2017-84826-P) also founded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

In both projects the research teams have explored the notion of epistemic vulnerability and have applied it to different areas of philosophical interest (theory change in science, heuristics, hermeneutics, post-truth or deep disagreements).
